***Junior Great Books is a non-sponsored program available to students of the Thompson School District.***

Junior Great Books is a program that provides students with advanced reading skills the opportunity for independent thinking as it focuses on classic literature. JGB has been in existence in the Thompson Valley District schools since 1966 with the primary goal of challenging the superior student to read and discuss seven advanced grade level books during the school year.

To participate, three elements are required: ability, time, and commitment. The groups are usually composed of 8-14 students, at least 2 adult facilitators, and begin with fifth grade. Meetings are typically once a month for an hour in the evening beginning in September. The goal is for the group members to learn to think clearly and logically, to communicate ideas effectively, and to listen with understanding and tolerance.
In addition to providing this opportunity for students, Junior Great Books is always seeking adults interested in being a part of the program, especially as facilitators. A brief training session will be held in August to become familiar with the objective and structure of the program. You may request to facilitate the group your child is in as well as offering to participate in as many groups as your time allows.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN JGB, PLEASE COMPLETE THE ENCLOSED REGISTRATION FORM AND BOOK PAYMENT ($35.00 COMPLETE SET) AND FORWARD TO ANNMARIE EVANS BY JUNE 1, 2014. A FEW PARTIAL BOOK FEE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE. CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE TO JGB.

If you have questions regarding the program, book selection, meetings or becoming a facilitator, feel free to contact either of the two people listed below.
